Dirk Wijs is a Belgian photographer and artist, born in April 1971 in Blankenberge.
During many years of his childhood, he had a restricted eye sight, and believed his human sight was limited to that. At about the age of 14 when he got his first pair of glasses, he saw the world for the first time in real focus ! Finishing secondary school in 1989, he started studying 'Photography' at the 'Royal Academy of Fine Arts ( KASK )' in Ghent in 1990 till 1995. After more than 12 years working full time for a big swedish company, his life took a major turn in 2013. Experiencing mental and physical burn out, he decided to make a bald career move and follow his true passion : 'Photography'.
An important new life chapter started for Dirk when shortly after quitting his job, he got invited to Andalusia in Spain in December 2013 by his long time friend and artist Louis de Cordier. After living almost 100 days alone and isolated in the wintery mountains of Tijola in the Alpujarras, Dirk felt reborn and destined to visit the nearest city of Granada where he eventually lived for almost 5 years. During those years he worked together with the dance group "Granada Tanz Teatro", directed by Trinidad Castillo, former student of choreographer Pina Bausch. Many upcoming professional dancers, actors and musicians asked Dirk to make their portfolios and videos. He became member of "Afogra" (Asociación Fotográfica Granadina) in 2014, and participated in the Collective Exhibition "Música" with Afogra in 2016 in Granada. In 2017 he had four photo exhibitions in the whole of Spain (for more details check Exhibitions). Many people called him "El fotógrafo del Alma" or the "Soul Photographer". He is very much appreciated for his unique portraits as well as for his documental black & white street photography.
In July 2018 he moved to Argentina to be reunited with his partner and musician and composer José Maria D'Angelo with whom he got married in April 2019. Dirk has been spotted in the world of Polo (Pilar), Horse Clubs and Events. As from August 2019 onwards, Dirk also offers every weekend a personalized photographic tour in the historical village of Capilla del Señor (75km from Buenos Aires).
